A Quick Guide to Organics
Consumer awareness has caused the organic market to explode. GoNaturally is a delicious, organic candy certified by QAI (Quality Assurance Institute/ USDA). All of our ingredients are carefully sourced to insure excellence and organic integrity.
1. What does Organic really mean?
The Organic Foods Production Act of 1990 was established because there was a lot of confusion about the definition. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Organic means food with no artificial fertilizers, genetic modification, irradiation or conventional pesticides. These days, the term “organic” is not only applied to fruits and vegetables, but also to beef, chicken, milk, eggs, grains….and, yes, even to candy.
2. What is the difference between the terms “Natural” and “Organic”?
Natural foods are different from organic foods. Organic food is produced without using: most conventional pesticides; fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge; bioengineering or ionizing radiation. Natural foods are “purer” than conventional foods, and do not contain any additives, such as preservatives or artificial coloring. While “natural” has no legal meaning, only products inspected and certified by the USDA can be labeled “organic.”
3. What are some of the benefits of buying organic foods?
Eating organic foods can reduce the amount of pesticides and chemicals that non-organic foods may bring into your body. You are also reducing your exposure to antibiotics, genetically modified crops, hormones and irradiated foods. Therefore, it isn’t just about what directly goes into your mouth, it is also about what remains in your body after the food is digested.
4. Is organics a niche market?
If you were alive in the 1970s, you might equate organics as a niche market appealing only to beatnicks and protestors. It ain’t so. Organics is in the process of going mainstream, not only in the USA, but in Europe as well. People are concerned about what’s in the food they eat. Since 1990, organic food sales have increased between 15 and 20 percent annually, totaling nearly $14 billion in the USA in 2005, according to the Organic Trade Association’s 2006 Manufacturers Survey. Total US food sales in 2005 were $557 billion, giving organics a 2.5 percent market share, double its market penetration in 2000.
